Mace races to national record
HIGH Wycombe cycling star Paul Mace smashed the 29-year-old Land’s End
to London record last week and then raced 320 miles north in time to
resume his RAF duties at 7.30am the next morning.
And for good measure Mace, of the High Wycombe Cycling Club, also broke
the Road Records Association 12-hour record, covering 262.5 miles in
that time.
Joining up with Tandem Trike specialist Ralph Dadswell, Mace blitzed
from Land’s End to London in 13 hours, 37 minutes and 35 seconds to take
more than 40 minutes off the previous record last Wednesday.
The pair made a hesitant start and were 12 minutes down on schedule at
one stage, but by the time they reached Andover they had turned that
into an eight-minute advantage and a powerful surge up the A4 completed
their record-breaking run.
Mace hardly had time to celebrate though. He went straight to Liverpool
Street Station for long haul north, eventually reaching Alnwick at
2.30am - just in time for his 7.30am shift.
